The writer discusses bioprospecting for medicinal plants in Africa. Bioprospecting is the systematic search for, and the development of, new sources of chemical compounds, genes, micro- and macro-organisms, and other economically valuable biological products. Traditional bioprospecting is linked with sociocultural and religious beliefs that must be understood by those practicing modern conservation and protection of Africa's biodiversity.
