Indications for splenectomy

Splenectomy may be indicated for either of two medical conditions: 1. for diagnostic reasons in order to clarify the undiagnosed process localized in the spleen and for the staging of malignant lymphomas, 2. or for therapeutic purposes in order to remove the pathologically exaggerated physiological function of the spleen residing in pooling, sequestration and destruction of blood corpuscles and to remove benign and malignant processes localized in the spleen. The spleen also may have to be removed because of traumatic or spontaneous ruptures causing intra-abdominal hemorrhage.
