NIH urged to involve the public in policy-making

A group from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) chaired by Leon Rosenberg of Princeton University has recommended that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) set up a new network of committees to allow public representatives to communicate more directly with NIH administrators. In its July 8 report, the IOM asserts that each new panel should represent a broad range of interests, including "disease-specific interest groups, ethnic groups, public health advocates, and health care providers." These tribunes would be selected by the NIH for 3-year terms and would sit on a Council of Public Representatives in the NIH director's office and on related councils in the offices of each of the NIH's 21 institutes and centers.
