A letter responds to Tallitsch's article in a previous issue (1996;271:S68-70) on the need for change in the education of physiology Ph.D. candidates. The employment opportunities for Ph.D. graduates are discussed, and the view that a professor's position in a small college is equivalent to a professor's position at a research university is challenged. A reply is published.
