A letter responds to Cole-Strauss et al.'s September 6, 1996, report regarding the application of a recombinant DNA technique to sickle-cell anemia research. The data in the report infer that, after exposure to oligonucleotides containing wild-type bA sequences, 50-80 percent of mutant, bS-globin loci in a B-cell population were converted to wild-type alleles. The absolute recombination frequency represented by this remarkable phenomenon is 3-6 orders of magnitude greater than that normally observed in cultured mammalian cells. A reply is published.
