Three papers presented at the joint conference of the International Society of Developmental Biologists and the Society for Developmental Biology, which was held on July 5-10 in Utah, are discussed. Jennifer Grenier and colleagues in the lab of developmental biologist Sean Carroll at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, reported on the role of "homeobox" genes in the diversification of insects. Ross Cagan reports on findings about the design of a fly's compound eye made by Patricia Powell and Susan Spencer, postdocs in his lab at Washington University in St. Louis. Finally, developmental biologist Makoto Asashima and colleagues at the University of Tokyo have used undifferentiated amphibian cells to form all the embryo's mesodermal tissues, such as muscle and internal organs.
