HIV is the leading cause of death in women aged 25 to 44 in New York, and African American women of the same age group nationwide, even though the death rate among all persons with AIDS decreased last year. Women also display shorter survival times, due to a variety of factors: relative poverty, hostility of the medical system, and the women's role as family caretaker. Studies show that fewer women have HIV viral load data in their medical records, fewer are taking protease inhibitors, and women overall were taking fewer antiretrovirals or prophylactic medications. An interview with several clinicians and researchers is included.
