Twenty-seven patients (24 with classical arthritis affecting the hands and three with osteoarthritis of the hands) wore Isotoner gloves at night in a study of their effect on the morning stiffness and loss of dexterity due to arthritis. The gloves under study were made of a spandex fabric. They were compared with close-fitting warpknit nylon gloves. Each patient wore one type of glove at night for an average period of one week, followed by a cross-over to the alternative type of glove for a similar period. The order of treatment was randomised. Women with rheumatoid arthritis found the Isotoner gloves were helpful in diminishing morning stiffness, loss of dexterity and morning swelling of the fingers. Isotoner gloves of this type form a useful adjunct to treatment in rheumatoid arthritis. In an investigation carried out at The Arthritis Center, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Moss Rehabilitation Hospital, Philadelphia, USA, involving a group of 24 women with rheumatoid arthritis, it was found that wearing of gloves overnight was well accepted, and seemed to spare the patients the need for extra analgesic medications to combat night-time paresthesias and morning stiffness of the hands.
