In this issue, B. I. Dahiyat and S. L. Mayo describe a new approach to de novo protein design. The researchers have distilled the rules, insights, and paradigms garnered from two decades of experiments into a single computational algorithm that predicts an optimal sequence of natural amino acids that adopts the zinc finger motif.
