Transfer of the virus Uukuniemi among the developmental stages of Ixodes ricinus under laboratory conditions

Larvae of Ixodes ricinus (L.) were infected with Uukuniemi virus by feeding them on mice, which were injected 5 or 6 times on average with the virus during the feeding period. Suspensions of 4 of 5 batches (each of 100 examples) of the resulting nymphs gave rise to infection on injection into mice, and a suspension of 1 of 75 of the resulting adults (which were tested separately) gave rise to infection in a mouse. Thus, trans-stadial transmission of the virus from larvae to nymphs and adults was shown to occur.
