An assessment of possible action mechanisms of oral contraceptives, which include inhibition of ovulation, non-acceptance by the endometrium of a fertilized ovum, and impenetrability of the cervical mucus by spermatozoa. Discussion of their clinical side effects includes nausea, disturbance in menstrual function, weight gain and effect on the libido.
