A report in the July 8 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Larionov et al. describes a new method for cloning whole human genes. The technique involves transformation-associated recombination and can be used to rapidly select clones containing any desired genomic fragment in yeast. Clones are selected for viability on the basis that all DNA in yeast exists in a circular form or has telomeric ends. Larionov et al. used the technique to isolate, for the first time, the genomic locus containing all of the BRCA2 gene.
