Six of 14 psychiatric patients given tryptophan combined with various monoamineoxidase inhibitors (isocarboxazid, phenelzine, nialamide, Actomol, Parstelin) showed striking improvement. In 10 cases given tryptophan combined with either imipramine or amitriptyline, only 1 improved. In the latter, only 1 patient had side-effects (nausea and malaise) but in the former group, 8 had significant side-effect, 6 of these so severe that tryptophan had to be discontinued.
