The treatment of heartburn in pregnancy

We have recently completed an investigation into the usefulness of a pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of heartburn in pregnancy. The tablet contains alginic acid (BPC) 260 mg in a flavoured base, sodium alginate (BPC) 260 mg (including 712 mg sucrose), magnesium trisilicate (BP) 26 mg and mannitol (BP) 935 mg, dried aluminium hydroxide gel 104 mg and sodium bicarbonate (BP) 88,5 mg. The preparation appears to be effective in the treatment of heartburn in pregnancy, affording complete relief in 62% and partial relief in a further 29% of the patients investigated. The regimen, as modified, seemed to be quite acceptable to practically all the patients in the trial. No adverse effects were evident in the infants born to the trial patients.
