A homogenized sample (e.g. milk, eggs, lettuce, tomatoes or sugar beet) is refluxed with H2SO4 and methanol for 16 h and is distilled. The methyl 3,5-dichlorobenzoate residues resulting from this herbicide Kerb were purified on a Florisil column, and were measured by GLC using 10% OV-17 on 80-100 mesh Aeropack 30 or Gas Chrom Q and electron capture detection. This method was sensitive to 0.01 ppm residue, as proved using 14C-labelled herbicide. Recoveries of the herbicide added to milk, as assessed by GLC and radio assay, respectively, were 76.0 plus or minus 73 and 74.0 plus or minus 5.0%.
