Sun Simiao was clever in his childhood. As he grew up, he read extensively and had a wide range of interests, including Taoism and Buddhism. He refused the official positions offered by the emperors of the Sui and Tang Dynasties several times. He kept living in seclusion and practicing medicine among the people. He had accumulated a rich experience and collected many folk recipes.
