Intrauterine polyethylene pessaries of the type DANA and DANA SUPER were applied to 380 women, 18 to 43 years of age. Expulsion of the pessaries was observed in 3.9% of the cases and intrauterine pregnancy occurred in 8.1%. The types DANA SUPER were more reliable. The position of the intrauterine pessaries in the gravid uterus was observed by hysterography. The active mechanism of contraception with intrauterine pessaries is discussed.
