Magnetic resonance and metastatic neck adenopathies. Usefulness of the technique for cervical staging

25 patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the larynx underwent staging of cervical adenopathies by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All patients subsequently underwent neck dissection. The MRI results were compared with the histopathological findings ans those gained through previous palpation. MRI correctly staged 54.1% of patients with a sensitivity of 66% and a specificity of 74%.
