Vaginal sterilization

This paper is a study of 123 cases of vaginal sterilization performed during a 3 year period, 1973-1975, at the Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. In all cases sterilization procedures were performed under general anesthesia. 32.5 of patients were between 30-34, and 43.9% and had had 5 or more deliveries. 59.2% of patients were concurrently pregnant; abortion was performed at the same time than sterilization; 1 patient had concomitant removal of IUD. Average stay in the hospital was 4-7 days, and mortality was nil. There were 20 cases of pyrexia and 2 cases of rectal injury. The 80 patients who reported for follow-up had no complaints and declared themselves satisfied with the sterilization. It appears from the literature on the subject that vaginal sterilization is more acceptable to the older and high parity woman, and that the recovery is quicker than an abdominal approach.
