Hormonal therapy has an established role in the treatment of women with metastatic breast cancer and also is now a major component of adjuvant systemic therapy for those with early-stage disease. Moreover, recent data suggest that hormonal agents may have a potential use in the prevention of breast cancer in high-risk groups. This article will provide a general overview of the current roles of hormonal therapy and describe future directions that show particular promise.
