A brief review of environmental and genetic influences on the occurrence of obesity in children is presented. The influences reviewed include: positive energy balance; childhood adipose tissue development; the perinatal environment; familial clustering and susceptibility; and genes involved in the regulation of energy balance, the endocrine system and body composition.
