The submitted retrospective study evaluates the long-term survival of patients treated on account of a malignant tumour of the rectum and rectosigmoid. The authors compare the results of radical surgery with rational radicality. Statistical evaluation of the survival of 170 patients subjected to radical surgery revealed significant differences as regards five-year survival of patients between these groups, although the differences of three-year survival are not statistically significant.
