Part of a special section on cardiovascular medicine. The design of a vast range of new devices that provide life-saving help to patients with diseased hearts marks a revolution in cardiovascular research. The gadgets range from the apparently simple, such as small metal tubes called stents that keep coronary arteries open after balloon angioplasty, to complicated, implantable microelectronic machines that can watch for and correct abnormal heart rhythms. Despite concerns about the soaring costs of the new devices, the pace of innovation is likely to continue, spurred on by increasing clinical needs and rapid advances in electronics and other technologies.
