Superovulation was induced in 14 Simmental heifers with PMSG (Folligon). Seven days after superovulation the ovaries were examined by ultrasonography and rectal palpation. Ultrasonography, using a B-mode ultrasound instrument with a 5 MHz linear transrectal transducer, was more reliable than rectal palpation. More follicles were identified (P<=0.049) and follicles were more easily distinguished from cysts by ultrasound scanning than rectal palpation.
