Data from a recent series of 12 patients with solitary ulcer of rectum, including 6 treated by rectopexy, were used to attempt clarification of etiology and clinical and histologic diagnosis of this variety of rectal ulceration. Its frequency, the means of improving histologic diagnosis and its association with prolapse of the rectal mucosa are discussed in order to update knowledge of its pathogenesis, this being related to one of the most common functional disorders, dyschezia.
