FDA approval has been granted to the first intravenous RhO (D) immune globulin preparation for the prevention of Rh isoimmunization and for the treatment of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in Rh-positive patients. The preparation is manufactured by Univax under the trade name WinRho SD. Similar formulations have been available for many years for intramuscular administration; the intravenous formulation is more expensive than the intramuscular formulations commonly used for Rh isoimmunization prophylaxis, but less expensive than other intravenous formulations for the treatment of ITP. Tables show the costs, routes of administration, and dosages of various drugs for Rh immunoprophylaxis in pregnancy and for the treatment of ITP.
