Circovirus-like particles in the bursae of young racing pigeons

The detection of circovirus-like particles in the bursae of several pigeons during virological investigations into inappetence, watery droppings and poor exercise tolerance in young racing pigeons is reported. It is suggested that since the samples were from pigeons in various locations in England, the infection is probably widespread. Concurrent adenovirus infection was diagnosed on several occasions and also a case of pigeon herpesvirus. Although the aetiology of pigeon circovirus has not been fully elucidated, it is suggested that the virus may cause immunosuppression in young pigeons following vaccination with pigeon paramyxovirus; this has yet to be determined.
