The prestigious Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, may be dragged into a contaminated-blood scandal. It has been alleged that, in 1985, efforts by the French government to keep a U.S. HIV antibody test off the market until a French company, Pasteur Diagnostics (PD), had its own version ready may have resulted in several hundred people receiving HIV-tainted blood transfusions. A former chief executive of PD has now been charged with complicity in the scandal, for allegedly urging the government to delay the marketing application for the U.S. kit. The Pasteur Institute Foundation holds 26.2 percent of the shares in PD, which also exclusively markets the discoveries of the institute's scientists.
