The immunological experience of a population with cytomegalorirus infection was evaluated by the detection of complement fixation antibodies. Sera coming from the area of Buenos Aires City and selected according to determined group characteristics were processed: a) 61 male blood donors; I)) 45 pregnant women in their first trimester; c) 107 cord blood samples; d) 138 children ranging from 4 months to 4 years of age, distributed in five age groups. An antigen, elaborated from cultures of human embryonic fibroblasts inoculated with the Davis strain, was used. The percentages observed in males and in pregnant females, both groups with ages ranging from 20 to 30 years, show a greater infection incidence in women. The antibody acquisition percentages in chili/reit indicate the frequency of infection during the first four years of life, showing the relationship existing between the index of cytomegalovirus diffusion and the precocity with which the infection is acquired. In pregnant women, the 88% positive percentage detected in the first trimester increases to 95% in samples gathered at the moment of delivery, thus confirming the peculiar susceptibility of the pregnant female, especially during the third trimester, to contract the infection or present a reactivation of a condition in a latent stage. Comparison is made between the results obtained fell in the population of Buenos Aires City and those observed in similar groups in other countries. The following conclusion was reached: the indexes of infection ran, according to the socio-economical levels, and not according to geographical differences. With regard to our study, the data obtained can be placed at an intermediate point when compared with those observed in countries representing conditions at both extreme situations, highly industrialized countries and developing countries.
