A successful method of providing diabetes education to hard-to-reach, at-risk populations is discussed. The method was developed for a low-income African-American community in which previous classes on diabetes education at a local health care center had been poorly attended. The solution to a successful program proved to be simply asking the community how they would like to be taught. By acting on the suggestions of participants, it was possible to create a popular, community-based program that gave participants the tools to cope with their diabetes for life. The diabetes education program, which was dubbed "Learn, Taste, and Share," is described.
