A symposium in June explored the issue of whether HIV could be eradicated from infected individuals. The meeting was sponsored by the University of Amsterdam and the journal Antiretroviral Therapy. Participants reported that viral replication has been suppressed for as long as two years in some patients, while others cautioned that, even with viral replication completely suppressed, HIV cells remain in the lymph system. No consensus was reached on the issue of eradicating HIV, although the introduction of protease inhibitors holds great promise.
