It is claimed that differences in the completeness of reporting systems, accessibility to laboratory confirmation of diagnosis, coverage and quality of house spraying programmes, and more favourable meteorological and geographical position are of greater significance than active surveillance when comparing malaria control in South Africa with that in neighbouring countries.
