We would conclude that amino acid infusions and keto adaptation are effective in maintaining BCAA levels required for protein synthesis and preservation of BCM. Dextrose infusions result in impaired ketogenesis with a resulting fall in circulating BCAA level because of ongoing BCAA oxidation. This has important clinical relevance in the management of postoperative patients with depleted skeletal and visceral protein reserves.
