Day surgery for children is intended to remove the need for an overnight stay in unfamiliar surroundings. Although the day surgery care can be excellent, afternoon surgery may result in the young patient having an unexpected overnight hospital stay in order to recover from the effects of the anaesthetic, as this article explains.
