Subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis caused by Acremonium recifei: case report

A case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to Acremonium recifei, a species whose habitat is probably the soil, is reported. The patient was a white immunocompetent woman from the state of Bahia, Brazil, with a history of traumatic injury to the right hand. The lesion was painless, with oedema, inflammation and the presence of fistulae. Seropurulent secretion with the absence of grains was present. Histopathological examination of material stained with haematoxylin-eosin showed hyaline septate hyphae. A culture was positive for A. recifei. Treatment with itraconazole, 200 mg/day, for 2 months led to a favourable course and cure. This is considered to be the first report in the literature of a case of subcutaneous hyalohyphomycosis due to A. recifei in an immunocompetent woman.
