FDA approval has been granted for "early access" use of riluzole for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Premarketing availability of the drug, which is manufactured by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer under the trade name Rilutek is limited; only 3000 of the 25,000 US patients with the disease can currently be treated. Rilutek is the first drug available for treatment of this disease; it is not yet available commercially in any country. No serious adverse effects have been reported.
