In a random sample of 95 married Tehran women 40 years old or younger mean length of breast feeding was 10.5 months; 67% of the mothers relied solely on breast milk and, for the 33% who began to give their infants supplementary feeds, the mean age at introduction of such feeds was 4 months. There was a tendency to postpone supplementary semisolid and solid feeding. Doctors, but not their subordinates, offer some advice to mothers on breast feeding.
