In the 103 years since the appearance of the philosopher Benedetto Croce's observations of "denti-scritti" marring the teeth of Neapolitan women, the scientific investigations of fluoride have advanced from discovery to cure to prevention. These advances have been largely the achievements of dentists in public health, research, clinical practice, and academia.
