Conventional methods of rehydration were compared with a glucose electrolyte solution for a total of 3000 children with diarrhoea. The findings indicated that electrolytes by mouth are safer, cheaper and more convenient. There was also a significant reduction in mortality and complications attributable to intravenous fluid treatment. The intravenous fluid requirements were significantly less when electrolyte fluid was given by mouth also.
