The mean duration of amenorrhoea, studied at random in 375 cases of lactation amenorrhoea, was 15.9 months, the duration being highest in older and multiparous women. Whilst no marked difference in duration was found between the low and middle income groups, it was lower in the higher income groups. The earlier the infants were weaned the shorter was the duration of amenorrhoea. It is concluded that lactation does act as a barrier to further conception by delaying ovulation, but it is not infallible and, therefore, unreliable for family planning.
