On the diagnostics and nomenclature of Sarcocystis species (Sporozoa) in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus)

From 1992 till 1994, 66 Capreolus capreolus from Schorfheide and Menzer Forst in Land Brandenburg, Germany (n=35) and Czempin, Poland were examined histologically, using light and electron microscopy, for Sarcocystis spp. 3 species of Sarcocystis were found and were identified as S. gracilis, S. capreolicanis and S. hofmanni. 59 of the 66 deer examined were infected with sarcocysts; 14 of 16 from Menzer Forst, 15 of 19 from Schorfheide and 30 of 31 from Czempin, Poland. 58 of the 66 deer were infected with S. gracilis, 4 out of 66 with S. capreolicanis and 42 out of 66 with S. hofmanni. 18 of the 59 infected deer had an infection with only one species of Sarcocystis, 37 had a mixed infection with 2 species and 4 individuals were infected with all 3 species.
