A new combined oral contraceptive WL 33 [combination of d-norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol] with 50 .mu.g estrogen and a lower total dose but incremental progestogen regimen was studied in 234 women for a total of 2002 cycles. The acceptability and effectiveness compared favorably with current combined preparations containing the same progestogen while the new preparation had the advantage of inducing significantly less weight gain, less intermenstrual bleeding after prolonged use and mimicking more closely the normal menstrual cycle.
