A combined clinical and electroencephalographic study of benzodiazepine tranquilizers (phenazepam, diazepam, temazepam, and oxazepam) was conducted. A significantly variable activity of the preparations studied was observed in terms of predominant sedative, tranquilizing or activating mechanisms. Effects of benzodiazepine tranquilizers on the brain electrical activity appeared in the dynamics of the local frequencies of the basic rhythms of the total EEG spectrum in 0.4-30 Hz range. Regardless of their clinical effect, benzodiazepines are characterized by activating beta-1-rhythm power in 14.5-19 Hz range. Dynamics of the low frequencies of 3.0-5.5. Hz (amplification), 7.2-9.8.Hz (amplification), and 10.2-12.5 Hz (attenuation) proved the most informative fragment in the sedative effect's EEG-pattern. Analogous ranges for the activating effect were 0.8-2.0 Hz (attenuation) and 5.0-5.8 Hz (attenuation). Based on the analysis of interactions between different EEG response components, common mechanisms of sedative and anxiolytic activity and a relative independence of activating effect are suggested.
