14 studies on family planning information, education and communications undertaken in Uttar Pradesh are reviewed. Studies on mass media channels have covered only a few of the media used and have generally been quite perfunctory. Wall paintings, mailings to village leaders, adult literacy classes, community radio programs, and taped messages in maternity wards have been found to haves ome influence. Studies of the communications effectiveness of family planning workers indicate that effectiveness can be increased by improving their credibility through regular replenishment of supplies, following a regular schedule of field visits, and encouraging a perception of the worker's interest in the family's welfare. Most of the studies of involvement of other individuals and agencies in the family planning program have sought to determine whether different categories of people were willing to become involved. Studies are needed on the best methods of persuading people to become involved.
