There are few procedures that a skilled dental assistant can perform that are as important or simpler than the placement of gingival retraction cord for crown and bridge. Placing gingival retraction cord (or string packing) is a function a qualified assistant (the legal requirements vary from state to state) can easily perform with little experience and patience. Yet it is a task that many dentists fail to delegate and assistants fail to suggest.
