For the physiotherapist, working with patients in an alcoholism and drug dependence unit is an interesting and rewarding task. Such patients often suffer from conditions which respond well to physiotherapy, as the physiotherapist is able to give more time to them than in an ordinary outpatient clinic. However, physiotherapists working in a general hospital may also have an excellent opportunity to encourage such patients to undergo long-term treatment with the aim to recover not only from complications of alcoholism and drug addiction, but also from the underlying state of dependence itself.
