3 cows were given subcutaneous injections of 100 mg 2-Br-a-ergocryptine-methane sulphonate on 8 occasions either between days 14 and 3 pre-partum or between day 9 pre-partum and day 3 post partum. In all animals the normal pre-partum rise in plasma prolactin level was inhibited but there was an abnormal increase in prolactin level after 3 wk, the onset of lactation was retarded and milk yield during days 1-10 of lactation was 46.9, 68.9 and 95% of that during a normal lactation. Effects on lactation were most prolonged when treatment was continued post partum.
