There is a variety of terms related to the classification of voice disorders still in use. The basic characteristics are discussed. Classification according to Perello, modified by the author, is recommended. On the basis of this classification, the "basic diagnosis" is suggested, with all necessary diagnostic procedures, having in mind the possible complex factors which might have led to the development and persistence of voice disorders. In case that these principles are not accepted, it is hard to perform a successful treatment.
