108 children 6 months to 5 years old with acute diarrhoea for <72 h in a hospital in New Delhi, India, were given vitamin A supplements orally (100 000 IU to infants and children <10 kg body weight and 200 000 IU to those >10 kg body weight). There was no significant difference in the mean duration of diarrhoea compared with 108 children not given the supplement. There was a significant beneficial effect of vitamin A supplement in children who had a pre-existing vitamin A deficiency with conjunctival impression cytology stage 3/5 and above, especially in those who had associated malnutrition.
