Clinical study of 425 couples soliciting vasectomies

The article analyzes the socio-cultural characteristics of 425 couples who asked and obtained vasectomy in 1976 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Most husbands were between 30-45, and most had been married for at least 10 years. 97.17% were catholics, and half had only elementary education; 48.94% were lower middle class, 26.82% were factory workers, and only 12.23% were professional. 73.16% of couples had already 3-7 children, and about half of them had 9-12 sexual relations a months. 63.52% had used contraception prior to vasectomy; the methods used were mostly the pill and the IUD. Motivation to choose vasectomy was the inability to raise more children, considering the economic situation. In 92% of cases there were no postoperative complications. Follow-up was possible only for 210 cases: all spermograms were azoospermic. It must be remembered that, in the cases considered, vasectomy was not chosen as a family planning method, but to avoid further pregnancies.
